For some crazy reason, I haven’t told very many people that I was on Cake Wars. For reasons that are completely irrational, I have honestly been ashamed of the fact that I didn’t make it to the second round. But it seems the more I share about my experience, people are absolutely amazed that I didn’t share sooner. So yes, here it goes. I was on Cake Wars and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my cake life 🙂
It all started with a simple email to the producer, and low and behold, they called me and asked me to do an audition tape. I never realized how hard that would be, but I managed to pull one together after 9 takes. I submitted it to the show, and within two weeks they contacted me to say I would be on the show. I went thru many different emotions at this point, amazement, shock, disbelief, and then I was just excited! I couldn’t believe this little baker from Modesto would be on Cake Wars. Here we go!
The filming started and my partner Diana and I were amazed to find that we would be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Beauty and the Beast. I absolutely love all things Disney, especially their cartoons. I must have watched Beauty and the Beast over 20 times in my lifetime, so I was really stoked. The competition was on, the baking began, and the creative was in full effect.
I have to admit at this point I was as nervous as heck. Cameras all around filming my every move. Judges watching merely 2 feet away. Talk about pressure. But I managed to somehow pull it together and Diana and I put together a very cute cake for the judges. Complete with Lumier and Cogsworth, and a table of cupcakes.
Everyone on my episode was extremely talented, so I knew the decision would not come easy to the judges. We waited for what seemed an eternity and then the news came that we were to be told the three to move on to the next round. My heart was beating so fast, my nerves on edge, and I couldn’t help but cry from all the emotion leading up to this moment. Here it was and…I had been cut. Whoo. Rush of emotion. This whirlwind ride had come to an abrupt end. Believe or not, I couldn’t stop crying for the rest of the day. I was so disappointed that we had been cut. I thought over and over again about what I could have done differently.
It literally took until the airing of my show that I could bring myself to watch Cake Wars again. But here was my episode, and I was on it! Wow, crazy! And the excitement once again, took over. I couldn’t wait to watch! After watching the episode, I realized I did my absolute best, everyone had amazing cakes, and unfortunately one person had to go home…and that was me.
What did I learn from being on the show? I tell you what, it took me sometime but I realized that yes, I can compete with the best. Yes, this little baker from Modesto does have some talent. And I can make some pretty amazing cakes!
